‘I come from a place that is shrouded by powerful cultural norms and customs.’-Colbert Mashile

Mashile is a contemporary South African artist whose work examines the cultural practice of storytelling passed down from generation to generation. His childhood is deeply embedded in African mythology, which surrounds stories of animals, spirits and heroes. Mashile takes elements from his lineage and these ancient fables to communicate and address socio-political problems within a contemporary South African environment.

His technique incorporates different mediums such as charcoal, acrylic, watercolour and collage. Mashile’s subject matter aims to create a visually dynamic dialogue between artwork and audience, referencing his traditional upbringing and heritage within western society. Mashile's imagery encompasses the theme of ritual with bold colour and a hint of humour. His work visually

demonstrates a dream-like aesthetic, where the animal subjects adopt human qualities as they use tools or wear clothes. This speaks to Mashile's connection to nature and the representation of animals within traditional African culture.
