Scali’s wines were handcrafted by Willie & Tania de Waal, 5th generation vignerons on their family farm, Schoone Oord on the slopes of Paardeberg, South Africa. The name ‘Scali’ is the Afrikaans term for ‘shale’, the predominant soil type in the Paardeberg. They produce only 3 wines, a Blanc (Chenin blanc, Chardonnay & Viognier-white blend), Pinotage & Syrah. Starting small in 1993, the quality of the 1997 Pinotage was so exceptional they decided to scale up produced and released their first official vintage in 1999. Jamie Goode writes, ‘winemaking is as simple as it comes here; most of the effort takes place in the vineyard to get the grapes just right.’
