PROVENANCE
Acquired directly from the artist

Mongezi Ncaphayi’s work holds a certain tension in colour palettes that both clash and please the eye, with mark-making that varies from straight, evenly spaced, vertical lines, to watery paint that leaks into the paper, seemingly of its own accord.

The artist expresses his attraction to line and pattern as: “…line as an element of art and how in its simplest form, it can transcend into something visually dynamic, which I believe is vital to any piece of art. I also use line to convey movement and emotion. Abstraction offers the possibility for profound, transcendental expression. I’m interested in art that communicates a universal sense of spirituality.”

The artist’s work has also been linked to jazz as there seems to be some regularities but also much movement, and room for play and improvisation in the free-flowing paint and the collaged elements. Ncaphayi has noted that music is the most transcendental form of non-objective art, the sounds producing images in the minds of the listeners. Music thus inspires him to produce art that is free of object, but evocative in the ability to activate sound and emotion. The works are charged with a form of senescence.

Mongezi Ncaphayi is represented by SMAC Gallery and has been the recipient of a number of recognised international artist’s residencies, beginning with the Ampersand Foundation in New York City in 2011; the Thami Mnyele Foundation in Amsterdam in 2016 and a number of others. Ncaphayi was also awarded the ABSA L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award in 2013 and the Africa First Art Prize at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair in 2019.

His art is included in major collections such as that of University of Cape Town; Iziko South African National Gallery; Smithsonian National Art Museum, Washington DC; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, to name a few.
