Marguerite Kaufmann was awarded the Rupert Shephard Art Prize in her final year at Michaelis School of Art ,Cape Town.
Now 95 years of age, the artist continues to sketch and paint, portraits being her favourite subject matter.
In the 1950's she was an adventurous recorder in oil, charcoal and graphic media of early morning activities the bustling fishing basin at the Cape Town Docks. She painted only en pleine aire, sitting on the quay, a familiar site to the fisherfolk.
The Pequena, derived from Dias's name "Angra Pequena" (small bay) was believed to be part of the Ovenstone fishing fleet, and hints at it's fishing grounds around the Namibian coastline. The boat was involved in the lucrative crayfish harvest at a time of abundance, invoking memories of a paradise lost and unimaginable in our 21st century world.
