In 1977, Vladimir Tretchikoff moved beyond the poised stillness of his celebrated portraits to tackle the kinetic drama of sport. The Try, Springboks vs British Lions captures the decisive instant of a try in one of the most closely followed rugby test matches of the decade. The visiting British and Irish Lions were the opposition, yet Tretchikoff renders no single player as protagonist. Instead, the figures form a larger field of motion, colour, and collision, where the spectacle itself becomes the central subject.
