 The following selected examples from the consignments received for auction in our October 2008 Cape Town Sale give yet further credence to the concept that this is shaping up as the sale of the year.

A GEORGE II WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS

18th Century

the outset rectangular top with feather banding above a pair of short and three long graduated drawers, on bracket feet, veneer loss, some staining, later handles, 96cm high, 100cm wide, 57cm deep

Lot 485 

A 12 INCH J & W CAREY CELESTIAL TABLE GLOBE

early 19th Century

the globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores laid to the ecliptic poles, with the axis through the celestial poles, the cartouche reads "CARY'S NEW CELESTIAL GLOBE ON WHICH are currently laid down upwards of 3500 Stars Selected from the most accurate observations and calculated for the Year 1800. With the extent of each Constellation precisely defined By MR Gilpin of the ROYAL SOCIETY, Made & Sold by J & W. Cary, Strand, London, Jan. 1, 1816", the engraved paper horizon graduated in degrees of amplitude and azimuth with compass directions, days of the month and days of the houses of the Zodiac, the mahogany horizon raised on four curved quadrant supports on a turned central column with a brass meridian support, on three cabriole legs with pad feet, centred by a glazed compass with paper and steel needle, restorations, 63cm high

A WILLIAM IV SATINWOOD, INLAID AMARANTH AND FRUITWOOD SOFA TABLE

circa 1830

the hinged rectangular top inlaid with an oval fan-shaped patera centred by a compass enclosed by a four-leaf clover, above a pair of frieze drawers and an opposing pair of dummy drawers, on stile supports with hipped legs, the sides of the drawer fronts and legs inlaid with panels of flowers and foliage, brass paw feet, on castors, 76,5cm high 169cm wide open, 67cm deep

A WILLIAM IV POLLARD OAK WRITING TABLE

circa 1830

the hinged rectangular twin-flap top inset with a gilt-tooled leather writing surface with ratchet support, above a frieze drawer flanked by pen and ink compartments, on stile supports with downcurved legs united by a turned stretcher, brass cappings and castors, drawer stamped 212, some veneer loss, writing gallery missing, 73,5cm high, 96cm wide open, 43cm deep

each oval back with pierced splat carved with an urn and swags of flowers and centred by a tablet painted with a classical figure, downcurved arms, serpentine caned seat, on square-section tapering legs (2)

early 19th Century

the arched pediment above a pair of conforming panelled doors enclosing five drawers, in sizes, and three shelves, the lower bombé-shaped half with a secretaire frieze drawer enclosing small drawers, a writing surface and pigeon holes, flanked by two further short drawers, with three long graduated drawers below, on shaped bracket feet, restorations. 240cm high, 169cm wide, 59cm deep

A BIEDERMEIER SATIN BIRCH AND EBONIZED BUREAU CABINET

second quarter 19th century

the superstructure with architectural cresting above a pair of cupboard doors, the upper flanked by columns and enclosing a shelf, the lower flanked by a pair of curved doors each enclosing a shelf and a drawer with mirrored back and surmounted by a three-quarter gallery, the lower section with a roll-top enclosing a pull-out drawer with a leather-lined writing surface flanked by sliding compartments and fitted with small drawers and cupboards, with three graduated long drawers below, the shaped apron with bracket feet, 245cm high, 120cm wide, 61cm deep
